Camera
Obscura has released records of artists and bands from a handful of countries
around the world, but ironically not very many from their home country, Australia.
That will hopefully change now that the native psych popsters/rockers the Sand
Pebbles have found their way to the label. Already after hearing the organ soaked
pop ditty of 'Noah's Ark' I know I need more of this. And more we get in 'Hey,
Let Me In' where this quintet switches modes to growling and scowling instrumental
garage rock with searing guitars running through its five minutes like molten
lava sluicing its way down a massive mountain slope. The closing side 'Sundowner'
shows yet another side of these talented Australians as they move into cinematic
and more experiemental terrorities. Of particular note is the amazing mellotron
that stays at the center of attention until the bitter end. This 70g 7" EP shows
three different but equally interesting sides of one band. I can't wait to see
which direction they choose for the future. I can't say I won't mind if they
decide not to choose one though.
